NSW claim National Paralympic 7-A-Side Football Championship

New South Wales have taken out the National Paralympic 7-A-Side Football Championships after recording a 1-0 win over Queensland in the final in Coffs Harbour.

Jack Starkey gave the hosts the lead in the 44th minute and it proved decisive as Queensland were unable to find an equaliser in a hard-fought contest.

The four day tournament was held from September 28 – October 1 with sides from NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Victoria competing for the title.

NSW cruised through the preliminary rounds recording impressive wins over Queensland (4-1) and Western Australia (3-1) along with an entertaining 2-2 draw with Victoria.

Queensland bounced back from the day one defeat against NSW to post successive victories against Western Australia (4-0) and Victoria (2-0) to book their spot in the final.

NSW found it far more difficult to break down a defensively resolute Queensland outfit in the final, with the hosts continually frustrated by their well organised opponents.

But some neat interplay in the second-half unlocked the Queensland defence and allowed Starkey to score the only goal of the game.

In the bronze medal game, Ben Roche netted a hat-trick as Victoria downed Western Australia 5-2 in a free-flowing encounter.
