Pararoos to continue World Cup preparations this weekend

Twenty ambitious Pararoos players will convene at Football New South Wales’ headquarters in Glenwood this weekend as competition for places in Kai Lammert’s squad to venture to this year’s IFCPF World Cup in Spain ramps up.

From Friday, 12 April to Sunday, 14 April 2019 players from Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales will participate in a three-day training camp at Valentine Sports Park as the Pararoos’ journey to Seville continues.

Several teenagers feature in Lammert’s 20-player squad including Connor Bunce (15), Jeremy Boyce (15), Daniel Campbell (16), Cosimo Cirillo (17), Rodrigue Niyongere (17), Taj Lynch (18), Augustine Murphy (18), Matthew Hearne (19), and Harrison Dowdell (19).

Lammert said that he’s eager to give youth a chance as the Pararoos look not only to July’s World Cup in Spain, but to next year’s World Championship Qualifiers and the IFCPF World Championship in 2021.

“Our three-day camp in Sydney this week will give us the chance to integrate several new players into the Pararoos family and grow our extended squad,” Lammert said.

“We will have four uncapped players with us in Glenwood, so this will be a great opportunity for them to demonstrate their abilities and impress as we continue to work towards this year’s World Cup in Spain.

“There are now less than three months until our World Cup kicks off in Seville, so we need to make the most of the days that we have together as we work towards our goal of finishing higher than we did at the 2017 IFCPF World Championship that was held in Argentina,” he said.

The Pararoos have displayed steady improvement on the international scene in recent years, having finished 13th in the world in 2013, 12th in 2015, and 10th in 2017. At the 2019 IFCPF World Cup, the Pararoos are aiming to achieve a top ten finish.

Achieving their target in Seville will be no simple task given Australia has been pooled in a challenging group. The Pararoos will play the world’s top-ranked side, Ukraine, as well as Argentina (5th) and hosts Spain (16th) in Group C.The 2019 IFCPF World Cup will be held between 4-20 July 2019, with the Pararoos set to play their opening match against Ukraine on Sunday, 7 July 2019.

Pararoos supporters can watch the squad train on Saturday, 13 April 2019 when the squad opens its session at VSP to the public. The session will commence at approximately 5.00pm.
